This is a new kind of tree based off the 2D foliage shader by but taken into the third dimension. It has very allowing you to instance a lot of trees without loosing realtime performance. The shader is rather complicated but you will find a condensed node group to go with the tree assets. You can also animate the foliage inside the shader which is way faster than having hundreds of leaves destroy your viewport performance.

How to make a tree:

  • model a trunk and branches (use the built-in sapling tree addon) without leaves
  • add a UV Sphere as a separate object to the scene (you can use very simple geometry for that, 12 segments and 8 rings is enough in most cases)
  • create a new material or use an existing material with the foliage shader
  • sculpt the tree in edit mode by duplicating the UV Sphere and place the foliage around the branches
  • Optional: add a modifier to the foliage and play with the Mix Factor to change how the foliage will look as a whole
  • Optional: combine trunk, branches and foliage into one object, remember to add a separate material to everything but the foliage as well and use vertex groups to mask the influence of the modifier
